Father’s Day falls every year on the 3rd Sunday in June. The warmer weather and longer nights due to the upcoming summer solstice provides the perfect time of year for a backyard barbecue in celebration of Dad. Not sure where to begin planning? The Event Specialists at the Wesson Kitchen are here to help you host a fun-filled Father’s Day backyard cookout. Some fun in the sun, cold drinks, and delicious food is all that’s needed to pull off a successful cookout. After all, spending time with family is what every Dad truly wants on Father’s Day!

1. Set the Atmosphere

Cover the picnic or patio table with a simple table cloth. It’s a small addition that will give your backyard party a casual yet elevated look. Next, forego the paper plates and level up to simple melamine ones. Melamine dishes are durable, affordable, and ideal for smaller outdoor gatherings. Plus, you’ll be able to reuse them many times over. Then, provide a fun ambience with an outdoor speaker and a curated playlist of Pop’s favorite tunes. Pick the songs he belts out during car rides, chants along to at sporting events, and that get him moving on the dance floor. Or, blast a Dad-themed playlist, such as Tidal’s Ultimate Dad Rock playlist or The Best Dad Songs Ever on Spotify.

2. Pick the Activities

Get the party started by providing a fun family activity Dad will enjoy- cornhole is the classic backyard game, but some other fun options are Frisbee, badminton, or even shooting hoops in the driveway. If Dad prefers a more low-key activity, games such as Boggle, and Scrabble provide a more relaxing type of family fun. Backyard Jenga is a great DIY option as well.

3. Perfect the Menu

A simple menu will work best for a casual family dinner in celebration of Dad. First, stock a cooler with ice and an assortment of Dad’s favorite beers, wine, sparkling waters, or pop. Next, fire up the grill and try our Wesson Grilled Shrimp and Grilled Chimichurri Chicken. Both are tasty favorites the whole family will enjoy. Serve with potato salad, corn bread, or dinner rolls on the side- whatever Dad tends to favor at the dinner table will do. Our Elote Salad (Mexican Street Corn) makes an excellent side dish if you’re up to try something new. Finally, cap off the meal with a sweet treat- our Wesson Black Forest Cupcakes can be made prior to the party, and are easy to serve outdoors. Above all, be sure to spend some quality time with the guest of honor.

Keep it simple and have Dad’s favorite drinks chilled and ready to go.
