The holiday season is upon us and with it comes the excitement of hosting parties with family and friends. If you’re looking to impress your guests and elevate your hosting game, a charcuterie board is the way to go. This delightful spread of cured meats, cheeses, and accompaniments has become a modern classic for any occasion. Plus, Charcuterie boards require minimal prep time, which means they’re a perfect fit for a busy host. The Wesson team has put together a few simple tips to help you assemble the best charcuterie board for your holiday party.

1. Choose the Right Board

Before you get your ingredients, you need your board! Selecting the right board makes all the difference in presentation and functionality. Opt for a large, flat surface to give yourself lots of space to arrange your spread. Wooden boards, marble slabs, or even large platters work well here. Choose the size of the board depending on the size of your charcuterie spread and the number of guests you’re hosting.

Regardless of the size of your charcuterie, we recommend finding a board that has raised edges to keep your spread well-contained and looking neat. Try adding a few decorative touches like fresh herbs or edible flowers to enhance the visual appeal.

2. Use the 3-3-3-3 Rule

When it comes to curating and assembling a charcuterie board, the 3-3-3-3 rule is a game-changer. This simple guideline helps ensure you have a balanced and visually appealing spread.

3 Meats: Fun fact, the word charcuterie refers to cold-cooked, cured, or smoked meats in French. As such, a good meat selection is key to a good charcuterie board. We recommend choosing three types of cured meats, such as prosciutto, salami, or chorizo. Aim for a mix of flavors and textures –some salty, some spicy, and some on the milder side—to cater to a variety of guests and palates.

3 Cheeses: A charcuterie board is incomplete without a selection of cheese! Choose three varieties of cheese to offer a balanced range of tastes and textures. Consider including a hard cheese (like Manchego), a soft cheese (such as Brie), and a blue cheese (like Gorgonzola). This combination ensures there’s something for everyone.

3 Starches: When it comes to starches, we love mixing it up with something crunchy, like crackers or chips, with something softer, like artisan bread. Some of our favorites include pita chips, multigrain crackers, and baguette slices topped with Wesson Plant Butter. All of which provide a satisfying base to your cheeses and spreads.

3 Accompaniments: Once you’ve laid out your meats, cheeses, and starches, fill in the empty spaces with three types of accompaniments to complement the meats and cheeses. Accompaniments are a great way to have fun and get creative with creating your spread. After all, the best part of a charcuterie board is how customizable it is!

We love balancing savory options such as stuffed olives or roasted nuts with sweeter flavors like grapes, dried fruit, and freshly cut vegetables. Adding in colorful accompaniments, like green and red grapes, also enhances the visual appeal of your board.

3. Add Spreads and Dips

Incorporating dips and spreads adds depth and flavor to your charcuterie board and pairs well with your starchy elements like bread or crackers. One of our favorite dips to use is Wesson’s Whipped Feta Dip with Cucumber & Mint, a creamy delight that beautifully contrasts the saltiness of the meats. Sweet and tangy spreads, such as honey, Wesson’s Onion Fig Jam, or Mustard Relish, also complement and elevate the overall taste of your board.

Use small bowls or ramekins to serve your dips and place them strategically around the board to ensure easy access for your guests. An easy way to elevate the visuals of your board is to use a variety of bowl shapes, sizes, and colors for an interesting yet cohesive look. We recommend placing your bowls on your board first and then assembling your meats, cheeses, and more around each bowl because it makes it easier to space out your spread.

4. Focus on Flavor Pairings

The magic of a charcuterie board lies in the way different flavors and textures come together to create a harmonious and delectable experience. To achieve this magic, it’s important to focus on flavor pairings when balancing your board.

A good place to start is by considering the flavor profiles of your cheeses and meats. We recommend pairing milder cheeses with delicate meats and stronger flavors with more robust options. For example, a creamy Brie pairs well with a sweet fig jam, while a sharp cheddar complements a spicy chorizo. Don’t forget to include fresh fruit like grapes or apples slices, which adds a refreshing contrast and natural sweetness. Accompaniments with sharper, more acidic flavors —such as pickles or olives—also help balance out the richness of your meats and cheeses.

Experiment with various texture combinations as well. The creaminess of a soft cheese balances out the crunchiness of a multigrain cracker. Dips and spreads are great for this, adding a velvety touch to your charcuterie board.

Assembling a show-stopping charcuterie board doesn’t have to be a stressful endeavor. Instead, your board might just be the eye-catching and mouth-watering centerpiece for your next dinner party that will keep your guests impressed and coming back for more.
